Spinal Decompression in Dallas
Are you looking for spinal decompression in Dallas? Do you suffer from chronic neck and back pain from an injury, medical condition, or illness? Do you have nagging pain and tension in your neck and/or back from an old injury? Nonsurgical spinal decompression therapy is an effective solution for relieving pressure on the spine, which can alleviate pain and discomfort. By applying gentle, yet forceful, spinal traction using a motorized traction unit, your chiropractor can stretch your spine to remove pressure from the discs in the spine (gel-like, shock-absorbing cushions located between the spinal vertebrae). Reach out to your local chiropractor in Dallas at Blackwell Chiropractic to schedule an appointment for spinal decompression or stop by for a walk-in treatment.
What Is Spinal Decompression?
Spinal decompression therapy involves the use of a traction unit to stretch the spinal column and supporting soft tissues. Stretching the spine in such a way removes pressure from the spinal discs, alleviating bulging or herniated discs, reducing pressure on the spinal nerves, and encouraging healthy circulation. Back traction is ideal for treating pain and spinal dysfunction caused by car accidents, work accidents, sports injuries, chronic pain, repetitive stress, and more.
The gentle distractive forces of the Spinal Decompression create a decompression of the spine with unloading due to distraction and proper positioning, to improve blood flow and nutrient exchange to the injured area. You'll experience several cycles of stretch and relaxation, which graduates to a peak over a period of several minutes.
Why Might I Need Spinal Decompression?
The discs that sit between each vertebra in your back can move out of position, suffer damage, start bulging, or become herniated, where the outer layer rupture and the inner tissues protrude. Disc problems are often painful and can affect your mobility, but spinal decompression can help your discs heal by stretching the vertebrae sufficiently to allow room for the damaged discs to realign.
If you’ve been diagnosed with a disc problem, or you suspect you have one, visit Dr. Graham for an examination. He’ll create a treatment plan for you based on his exam and by talking to you about your symptoms. Spinal decompression is most often recommended in cases where discs are involved, but it can also be effective for other causes of back pain, such as sciatica. Spinal decompression is not recommended for men and women if they have:
- Broken or fractured vertebrae
- A fused spine
- Artificial discs or implants
- Chronic pain following surgeries
- Degenerative spinal disease
It’s also not advisable for pregnant women to undergo spinal decompression. If Dr. Graham doesn’t recommend spinal decompression, he will discuss alternatives.

What Happens During A Spinal Decompression Treatment?
When you attend Blackwell Chiropractic for spinal decompression therapy, you will lay on a motorized table. The table has two halves and will stay horizontal at all times. One half will be stationary, while the other half will move back and forth. The half that holds the upper part of your body will be on the stationary portion. The half that holds the bottom half of your body will be on the moving portion. You won’t need to get undressed. You’ll just lay down and relax.
Dr. Graham will put a harness around your hips. The harness will keep the bottom half of your body attached to the table. As the table moves back and forth, the motion will gently pull on your vertebrae, stretching and relaxing your spine and helping any protruding discs or disc tissues to move back into place. The process shouldn’t be painful. You’ll just be aware of a stretching feeling in your back.
What Happens After Spinal Decompression Therapy?
Each spinal decompression session lasts 30-45 minutes. The average person attends 15-30 sessions over 4-6 weeks. After each session, Dr. Graham will advise you on the types of exercises you should perform to promote healing. He’ll also discuss any activities you should avoid. Following his guidance will help your discs heal and remain in place, so self-care is an essential part of your treatment schedule.
